How much electricity solar panels make in Sheffield

A south-facing 1kWp system at 35 degrees in central Sheffield generates about 943 kWh a year, according to the EU's PVGIS model. That ranks 17 of the 20 areas we cover, which run from 850 kWh in Glasgow to 1,119 kWh in Dorset. East and west roofs still work, at roughly a fifth less.

Roof direction (35° pitch) Per kWp a year June December
South-facing943 kWh111 kWh31 kWh
East-facing748 kWh106 kWh12 kWh
West-facing742 kWh105 kWh12 kWh

PVGIS is a modelled figure for an unshaded roof with 14% system losses, and it runs higher than the MCS method installers must use for your written estimate, which gives roughly 800 to 950 kWh per kWp for a well-oriented UK roof. Use PVGIS to compare places and the installer's MCS estimate to plan your budget. Our guides to which direction panels should face and how much electricity solar panels produce go further.

What that electricity is worth in Sheffield

Every unit you use yourself saves 25.60p, the Ofgem price cap rate for direct debit customers in the Yorkshire region from 1 October to 31 December 2026. The Great Britain average is 26.32p. Every unit you export earns whatever your Smart Export Guarantee tariff pays, which the Energy Saving Trust puts at around 12p typically.

Take the Energy Saving Trust's typical 4.5kWp home system. On the PVGIS figure for Sheffield it would generate about 4,244 kWh a year. If you used all of it, that would be worth about £1,086. If you exported all of it, about £509. Real homes sit between the two, and a battery or daytime use pushes you towards the higher figure. The Energy Saving Trust prices that typical system at around £7,600. See our solar panel cost guide and current export rates.

Sheffield is catching up fast

The government counted 11,055 solar installations in Sheffield at the end of 2025, up from 9,633 a year earlier, a rise of about 15%. That is still about 48 per 1,000 households by our count, below the UK average of about 69, and the government warns its 2025 council figures undercount. On its domestic figures for August 2026, Sheffield Hallam has the most installations of the city's constituencies.

Sheffield's housing suits rooftop solar well. At the 2021 Census, 38.0% of households lived in semi-detached houses against 31.5% across England, and 58.3% owned their home. A semi usually has a full roof slope of its own, which is the easiest kind of roof to put panels on.

Warm Homes grant and the council's climate bond

Sheffield City Council secured £3.4 million of Warm Homes: Local Grant funding in March 2025 to upgrade more than 220 homes, and solar panels are one of the measures it lists. It is open to privately owned or privately rented homes rated EPC D to G, with a household income of £36,000 or less, a means-tested benefit, or a qualifying postcode. Because of demand the council adds local priority bands, for example favouring owner-occupiers with savings under £23,250.

The council's first climate bond raised £1 million from residents, who could invest from £5, to fund solar panels on 21 city schools. It plans a second bond later in 2026 to fund more solar. Our guide to solar panel grants in the UK covers the national schemes.

Planning in Sheffield: Nether Edge and Broomhill

Sheffield City Council says solar panels on a house in a conservation area can usually be permitted development, but Nether Edge and Broomhill are exceptions. Article 4 Directions there mean houses may need planning permission for panels on a roof slope facing a highway. Sheffield has 38 conservation areas inside the city boundary.

If you are in Nether Edge or Broomhill, a rear slope facing away from the road is the simpler option, and an installer who has worked there will know. Our guide to permitted development for solar panels has the national rules.
