There is no official best solar panel in the UK. The only authoritative list is the MCS Product Directory, and it records whether a panel is certified, not whether it is good. MCS says so itself, in the standard: "Certification against this Standard does not imply compliance with regulations which may apply to such products unless explicitly stated." A certified panel has cleared a bar. It has not won anything.
That leaves a real question, because you still have to pick. Below is what genuinely separates one panel from another on a UK quote: the certificate status, which right now matters more than usual, then power tolerance, the warranty table, efficiency, and the way bifacial panels are measured. Most of them are printed on the datasheet and the warranty PDF, both of which your installer can email you in a minute.
One thing to check before anything else. On 1 August 2026 a batch of solar panels lost MCS certification and is now running on a grace period that ends on 1 February 2027. If your quote names one of them, that is worth knowing before you sign.
Ask each installer for the panel model number and the mounting system name, not just the manufacturer. Both are certified separately, and both are checkable in a public directory.

No, and the organisations best placed to publish a ranking pointedly do not. The Energy Saving Trust's solar advice page, updated on 27 August 2026, names no panel brands at all. Its buying advice is process, not product: "Get quotes from at least three installers. Make sure the installers you look at are MCS-certified, which ensures they adhere to a strict code of conduct."
MCS runs the Product Directory, and its own framing is about compliance. The directory page describes what certification does in one line: "MCS product certification ensures products comply with MCS Standards for quality, reliability and performance." Comply is the operative word. Every certified panel has met the same requirement, which is precisely why the directory cannot rank them.
Read the standard itself and the limits are stated plainly. MCS 005 Issue 4.0, the Solar PV Product Standard, says: "Whilst it is not possible to ensure safety, this Standard includes criteria which should help to mitigate potential safety risks from the installation and operation of the product." That is a careful sentence from the body that certifies the product, and it is a more honest description of what a certificate is worth than anything on a sales brochure.
So the panel brand is not nothing, but it is a long way down the list of things that change your outcome. Orientation is worth 15 to 20 per cent, and the Energy Saving Trust puts that number on the record: a system facing east or west "tends to get around 15-20% less energy than one facing directly south". The panel on your quote may be on a certificate that expires on 1 February 2027
On 1 August 2026 an updated version of the MCS solar PV product standard became mandatory, and panels that had not transitioned to it lost their certification that day. MCS then granted a six month grace period so existing stock could still be fitted. It runs out on 1 February 2027 and will not be extended.
The announcement, published by MCS on 30 July 2026, is unusually blunt about the scale of it: "The update to MCS 005 will mean a significant number of solar PV products will no longer be MCS certified from 1 August, which presents a risk to the wider supply chain."
What triggered it is a change of reference standards rather than any fault in the panels. MCS 005 Issue 4.0 was published on 1 August 2024 with a two year run-in, and the standard states it directly: "Compliance with this update is mandatory for products to be certified in accordance with MCS 005 from the date of implementation 01/08/2026." Clause 6.1.1 sets out what a panel must now meet, and the headline items are the 2021 editions of the international test standards: "BS EN IEC 61215-1:2021 & BS EN 61215-2:2021" for test requirements and procedures, and "BS EN 61215-1-1:2021" for crystalline silicon modules, which is the module type a UK home install normally uses.
MCS is explicit that this is not a safety story. "For clarity, the withdrawal of these products is not due to any identified safety concerns with the products." It is equally explicit that the grace period is a stock clearance measure and nothing more: "The purpose of this grace period is to allow existing product stock held within the supply chain to be exhausted and used as part of MCS certified installations. It is not a product certificate extension and should therefore not be regarded as an opportunity for manufacturers to continue producing or bringing affected products into the market during the grace period."
For a homeowner that cuts two ways, and both are worth saying out loud.
- It is not a reason to refuse the panel. An installer may fit grace period products in MCS certified installations until 1 February 2027, so your installation certificate is valid and your Smart Export Guarantee application is unaffected. MCS has said there is no safety concern.
- It is a reason to ask about price and about spares. This is stock being cleared to a deadline, and it is not being replaced. If you want to extend the array in two years, or a panel needs replacing outside warranty, matching it will be harder than matching a panel still in production.
How to check the panel on your quote, in about two minutes
The MCS Product Directory is public, free and searchable by model number, which is the only identifier that matters. Brand names are not unique enough: manufacturers run several ranges at once, and the warranty terms can differ between them.
- Get the exact model number from your quote. It looks like a part code, not a marketing name.
- Open the MCS Product Directory and search that model number.
- Open the entry and read three fields: Current Certification Status, Certification Period, and the Certification Number.
- If the certification number ends in "(GRACE PERIOD)" and the period reads 01/08/2026 to 01/02/2027, your panel is in the batch described above. MCS confirmed that labelling in its announcement: affected listings are "clearly marked in the MCS Installations Database (MID) and MCS Product Directory with the label 'GRACE PERIOD' after the certification number, with certification dates displayed as 01/08/2026 to 01/02/2027".
Checking the live directory on 14 September 2026, both patterns are easy to find side by side. A Sunman SMH525J listing carries certification number MR 50720908 0001/196 with a certification period of 26/03/2026 to 25/03/2031, which is a normal five year term. A Talesun TD7G72M-530 listing carries "BABT8783-034-530W (GRACE PERIOD)" running 01/08/2026 to 01/02/2027, as do Phono Solar listings for the PS275MH-20/U and PS370M4-20/UH. Same directory, same day, two very different certificates.
The directory also filters by certification status, with "Certified" and "Certification Expired" as the two options, so a panel that has simply dropped off the scheme is visible rather than hidden. That is the check worth doing on any quote, not only this year.
The four datasheet lines that actually separate panels
Once two panels are both certified, the differences that matter are numerical and they are all published. Ask for the datasheet and the warranty document as a PDF. An installer who will not send them is telling you something.
1. Power tolerance, which is why a 440W panel might not be 440W
The wattage on the label is a nominal figure with a tolerance either side, and MCS 005 sets rules about how that tolerance may be written. Clause 6.2.1 says module maximum power tolerances on the datasheet and label "shall be either: a) A value either side of zero (e.g. +/- 5%) or b) A value relative to zero (e.g. 0% to +3%)". It then closes the obvious loophole: the minimum and maximum cannot both sit on the same side of zero, and "A tolerance range of greater than 10% between the minima and maxima is not permitted".
The practical reading is simple. A panel quoted at 0% to +3% cannot ship below its label figure. A panel quoted at plus or minus 5% can, and on a 440W panel that is up to 22W per module, or around 264W across a twelve panel roof. Two quotes with identical total kWp are not identical if one uses positive-only tolerance and the other does not.
2. The warranty table, not the warranty headline
Panel warranties come in two parts and they are almost never the same length. The product warranty covers defects in materials and workmanship. The performance warranty guarantees a minimum output over time. A brochure headline of "30 year warranty" is generally the performance figure rather than the product one, so it is worth checking which is being quoted.
The numbers that matter sit in a table in the warranty PDF. Phono Solar's Limited Warranty for PV-Modules, which covers all modules delivered since 1 February 2024, sets out three different sets of terms for its own ranges:
- Standard P-PERC modules: 12 year product warranty, 25 year power warranty, 2.0% first year degradation, 0.55% a year after that, and a floor of 84.8% at the end of the term.
- Dual glass P-PERC modules: 12 year product, 30 year power, 2.0% first year, 0.5% a year, floor of 83.5%.
- The M7GF series: 15 year product, 30 year power, 1.0% first year, 0.4% a year, floor of 87.4%.
One manufacturer, three answers, and a spread of nearly four percentage points in guaranteed output at end of term. That is the case against choosing by brand in a single table. For comparison, Risen Energy's warranty certificate for its crystalline modules runs a 12 year product warranty alongside a 25 year power warranty, with minimum power "not less than 97.5%" at the end of year one and no more than 0.6% a year thereafter.
Note which number moves most between those ranges: the first year degradation. A panel that gives away 2.0% in year one starts its whole guaranteed curve lower, and it never catches up. How long solar panels last covers what those curves mean in practice across a system's life.
3. Efficiency, which matters only when the roof runs out
Panel efficiency decides how much power you get per square metre, not how much you get per pound. If your roof has room for the system you want, a higher efficiency panel generates no more electricity than a larger array of cheaper panels rated to the same total kWp. If the roof is the constraint, efficiency is the only way to fit more generation into the space.
The Energy Saving Trust's benchmark system is 4.5kWp, "typically using around 12 panels" over 20 to 30 square metres. Measure your usable roof against that before paying an efficiency premium. Our guides to solar panel efficiency and solar panel dimensions cover both halves of that sum.
4. Bifacial panels are rated under different test conditions
A bifacial panel generates from its back face as well as its front, and its headline wattage may be measured with that rear light included. MCS 005 clause 6.1.2 requires it: "For Bifacial modules... the power output should be determined at BNPI test conditions." BNPI, as defined in BS EN 61215-1:2021, means 1000 W per square metre on the front and 135 W per square metre on the rear. Standard Test Conditions use 1000 on the front and zero on the rear.
So a bifacial wattage and a standard wattage are not directly comparable, and on a typical pitched roof, with panels close to the tiles, there is limited rear light available to collect. The MCS directory records the test conditions used for each listing, which is the neutral place to check. Solar panel types goes through where bifacial genuinely earns its keep.
What the warranty will not pay for
Panel warranties are parts warranties. Getting the panel down off your roof and a new one back up is almost always yours to fund. This is the single most consistent finding across manufacturer warranty documents, and it is stated without ambiguity.
Phono Solar: both the product and the power warranties "do not cover any costs associated with installation, removal or reinstallation of the PV modules", and elsewhere, "Costs incurred due to dismantling, repacking, installation or reinstallation the module(s) and other related expenses shall be borne by the Customer."
Risen Energy replaces a defective module "at no charge to Purchaser for parts or labor" and pays to reship the replacement, but "will not be responsible for the costs related to removal or installation or reinstallation" of the module.
That matters because access is what costs money on a UK roof. A claim in year fourteen means scaffolding and a crew for a part the manufacturer is posting you free. Which is why the installer's own workmanship warranty, and whether that firm will still exist, is worth more attention than the extra five years on a panel brochure. The same logic applies to the inverter, and here the Energy Saving Trust has a specific warning. It expects an inverter to need replacing "after around 12 years", notes most carry a five year warranty "which you can often extend by up to 15 years", then adds: "You might find that a 15-year warranty costs almost as much as a replacement inverter, so consider it carefully."
The mounting kit is certified separately, and some of it is on borrowed time too
Solar PV and Solar PV Mounting are two different technology types in the MCS directory, with two different standards and two different certificates. The rails, hooks and clamps holding your panels to the roof went through their own version of the same transition, a year ahead of the panels.
MCS confirmed on 10 August 2026 that the mounting grace period had closed: since Issue 3.0 of MCS 012 took effect on 10 May 2025, withdrawn products had been allowed through on a grace period, and "This grace period ended on Monday 10 August." From that date, "The MCS Product Directory will only show solar mounting products that are certified to the latest version of MCS 012 (issue 3.0)."
A small group of products got an extension, for a reason that has nothing to do with the products themselves. In MCS's words, "product certification body BBA has had its accreditation suspended by UKAS and is unable to make certification decisions, meaning that some manufacturers were not able to achieve certification by this deadline for reasons outside their control." The named extensions include five Fastensol roof mounting products, whose grace period ends on 20 October 2026, plus Clenergy's PV ezRack Trapezoidal and two Solar Slate Plate products.
Ask your installer which mounting system they are quoting, by name. On a slate roof in particular the hook is a specific certified product, not a generic bracket, and solar panels and a new roof covers why the fixing choice outlives the panels on top of it.
So what should you actually buy?
Buy the installation, not the panel. That is the uncomfortable answer, and it is the one every neutral source lands on. The panels are one line item in a job the Energy Saving Trust benchmarks at around £7,600 for a typical 4.5kWp system, alongside the inverter, the mounting system, the scaffolding and the labour. Roof orientation alone is worth 15 to 20 per cent on the Energy Saving Trust's own figures, and how much of the electricity you use yourself drives the payback. Those are bigger levers than the badge on the module.
A workable order of operations:
- Three quotes, all from MCS certified installers. The Energy Saving Trust's standing advice, and it also gives you three panel options to compare rather than one to accept.
- Ask for the model number, the datasheet and the warranty PDF for the panel on each quote. All three should arrive the same day.
- Check each model in the MCS Product Directory for status, certification period and the grace period label.
- Compare the warranty table, not the headline year count. First year degradation and the end of term floor are the numbers that differ.
- Check the power tolerance is positive-only or at worst symmetrical, and confirm the installer's own workmanship warranty separately.
If two quotes come back with equally certified panels and similar warranty tables, you have your answer: the panel is not the difference, and you should be choosing on the installer, the design and the price. "Is the panel you have quoted me on a grace period MCS certificate?" Any installer working to the scheme will know, because they have to select the product when they raise your MCS certificate. If they do not know, check the model number yourself before you pay a deposit.

Efficiency determines power per square metre, not power per pound, so a larger array of cheaper panels rated to the same total kWp generates the same amount. It is how far the panel's actual output may vary from its label wattage. On a UK roof that means scaffolding and a crew at your expense, which is why the installer's workmanship warranty deserves as much attention as the panel's.
Rarely on a standard pitched roof, because panels sit close to the tiles, which limits the rear light the back face can collect. It also complicates comparison: MCS 005 clause 6.1.2 requires bifacial power output to be determined at BNPI conditions, which add 135 W per square metre of rear irradiance, while Standard Test Conditions use zero.
