SunPower Maxeon Solar Panels UK

If a SunPower or Maxeon panel is on your quote, the question worth asking is who would actually honour the warranty. SunPower Corporation declared bankruptcy in 2024, and the company behind the current UK warranty is TCL SunPower Global. Here is what that warranty covers, and the one step that sets how long it runs.

The UK warranty behind a SunPower panel is TCL SunPower Global's, and its 40 year term only holds if you register the panels online. Without registration the term is shorter, and how much shorter depends on the model. The model by model figures are further down this page.

Who backs a SunPower warranty in Britain

TCL SunPower Global does. It is the company that launched SunPower Origin across Europe this month. Its UK warranty document took effect on 1 September 2026. It covers modules "from TCL SunPower Global" fitted in the United Kingdom, and a claim under it is made by contacting TCL directly. Here is where SunPower Corporation and Maxeon Solar Technologies now stand.

SunPower Corporation was the warranty holder for the systems and panels it sold, and it declared bankruptcy in 2024. Maxeon now covers only legacy SunPower panels fitted before 5 August 2024, and only where the owner self-registered the system with Maxeon before 31 December 2024. If your panels went up before that date, that is where you stand. Ring whoever fitted them first. Source: Maxeon Solar Technologies, warranty page.

Maxeon Solar Technologies, the Singapore company whose name these panels carried, has troubles of its own. On 9 April 2026 the High Court of Singapore put Maxeon and its subsidiary under interim judicial management. Tan Wei Cheong and Lim Loo Khoon of Deloitte Singapore were named as joint managers. Trading in its shares stopped on 1 May 2026, and the shares were later removed from Nasdaq. Sources: Maxeon filing with the SEC and the Nasdaq delisting notice.

None of that changes who you would chase if a panel fails. Origin is sold to SunPower Partners across Europe, and the UK warranty is TCL SunPower Global's. SunPower pioneered this back contact technology four decades ago and first put it into commercial production in 2004. TCL is the name that has to honour a claim decades from now. So ask your installer to write that name on the quote, not just "SunPower", and keep the warranty document they hand you.

What back-contact cells do on a British roof

Most panels run metal wiring across the front of every cell, where it blocks the sun. SunPower moves that wiring to the back, so the whole panel is collecting sunlight. That is the whole point of the design, and it is where the premium goes.

Shade is where you see the difference. TCL SunPower calls it the hardest test for any panel: a chimney, a vent or a layer of leaves forces current through the shaded cell and heats it. It says a 54 cell Origin panel acts as though it held more than 16,000 bypass diodes. The shaded cell stays below 100 degrees Celsius and the rest keeps working. It says TUV Rheinland has rated the panel Class A+ for shade. Source: TCL SunPower Global, SunPower Origin launch, 19 October 2026.

The other case is a roof with no room to spare. Picture a Bristol terrace with one usable south slope, or a semi where a dormer eats half the back pitch. There a better panel can earn its price, because squeezing more out of the space may be the only way to fit the system you want. If your roof is clear and open, weigh that premium harder. Our guide to solar panel efficiency explains how to read those figures on a quote. Choosing panels for a UK roof sets out what else is on the market.

The UK range: Origin, M Class and Performance

TCL SunPower Global's UK site puts its back contact panels, SunPower M Class and SunPower Maxeon, on a 40 year warranty, and SunPower Performance, its value line, on 30 years. That warranty page is the quickest way to tell the three apart, and a quote should say which of them it means.

Origin is the one launched this October. Orders opened across Europe on 19 October 2026, announced from Lyon, and first deliveries are due before the end of 2026. The home model is the SPR-BE54-HD. It is a fully black panel with 54 cells. It measures 1,800 by 1,134 by 30 millimetres and weighs 26 kilograms. It is rated 485 to 505 watts at 23.8 to 24.7 per cent efficiency. Its power temperature coefficient is minus 0.26 per cent per degree Celsius, and it loses no more than 0.25 per cent a year. Source: TCL SunPower Global, SunPower Origin product page.

The other back contact line is the M Class. In the UK warranty table its model numbers start SPR-BE54-DC or SPR-BD54-DC, and they carry 40 year terms too.

The Performance line is a different animal. Its model numbers start SPR-P7, and TCL SunPower's own comparison labels it SunPower Shingled. Its warranty runs 30 years and it fades faster, at up to 0.35 per cent a year against 0.25 for the back contact panels. It is a good panel. It is simply not the one the 40 year headline is about. The 30 year term also starts from Performance 7, not from earlier models. Source: TCL SunPower Global, SunPower warranty, UK.

So if a quote just says "SunPower Maxeon", you cannot price it. Ask which line, and ask for the model number. The gap between an SPR-BE54-HD and an SPR-P7 is ten years of cover and a different fade rate in the warranty table.

The 40 year warranty, and the step that protects it

Register the panels online, or lose years of cover. The UK document puts the Origin models at 40 years on the panel and its output. With no registration that falls to 30. The SPR-BE54-DC and SPR-BD54-DC models are also 40 years, falling to 25. The SPR-P7 models are 30 years, falling to 25. Registration is done through the electronic tools the manufacturer provides. Ask your installer to do it, to confirm it is done, and to send you proof before you pay the balance.

On output, the warranty promises 99 per cent of the panel's rated power in year one. After that it may fall by no more than 0.25 per cent at the start of each year, down to 89.3 per cent in year 40. For Performance 7 the yearly step is 0.35 per cent, reaching 87.4 per cent in year 30. Those are the UK figures. The separate Maxeon warranty document covers modules installed in the United States, Canada or Puerto Rico, and says it is not applicable in other jurisdictions.

Service cover is the part worth most to a British homeowner. TCL SunPower's UK site describes it as repair, replacement or refund for any defective panel for up to 40 years, with removal, shipping and installation included in applicable countries. The UK warranty document puts that in writing: TCL pays the reasonable and necessary cost of getting a panel down and the replacement back up. That holds for panels fitted in the UK by an authorised TCL installer or partner, or by an independent installer working with an authorised TCL distributor. So ask what the other panels on your quote do about removal and refitting.

The cover has limits, though. Ground mounted panels and carports drop to 25 years unless TCL approves them in writing and the panels are digitally registered. And the warranty sits on top of your rights under the Sale of Goods Act 1979 and the Consumer Protection Act 1987, rather than replacing them.

The warranty is not the only thing on a quote with a date attached. Fitting solar panels in a home carries zero per cent VAT from 1 May 2023 to 31 March 2027. After that, from 1 April 2027, it goes back to the reduced rate of five per cent. Source: gov.uk guidance on VAT for energy-saving materials. Our guide to VAT on solar panels covers how that works on a mixed quote.

Is the premium worth it on your roof?

Ask for the same system quoted with SunPower panels and with a cheaper panel. Origin is sold to SunPower Partners, so your installer is the route to a price, and that comparison is how you find out what the premium is on your roof. There are roofs where that premium earns itself, and roofs where it does not.

A small or awkward roof is the strongest case. When the usable pitch is tight, getting more watts per square metre can decide whether the system fits at all, and efficiency stops being a line on a spec sheet. Partial shade is the next one, for the reasons above.

Then there is how long you plan to stay put. Forty years of cover, with removal and refitting included, is a very different offer from the 25 years you drop to by not registering. It is worth far more to someone settling in than to someone moving on in a few years.

The case weakens on a clear, open, roomy roof where budget is the real constraint. On that kind of roof, price the cheaper panel too before you decide. Our guide to what solar panels cost in the UK sets out the whole system picture, and our page on Aiko panels is worth reading alongside this one.

Whichever panel you pick, the installer matters as much as the brand. To claim the Smart Export Guarantee you have to show that your installation and installer are certified under the Microgeneration Certification Scheme, or a scheme accredited as equivalent. An authorised installer is also the condition attached to the service part of the SunPower warranty. Both conditions come down to the same choice of installer. See how to choose an MCS-certified installer for what to ask before you sign.

Frequently asked questions

Who makes and warrants SunPower panels in the UK?

TCL SunPower Global issues the warranty. Its UK warranty document took effect on 1 September 2026, covers modules from TCL SunPower Global fitted in the United Kingdom, and a claim under it is made by contacting TCL directly. SunPower Corporation, which was the warranty holder for systems and panels it sold, declared bankruptcy in 2024. Maxeon Solar Technologies, the Singapore company whose name these panels carried, was put under interim judicial management on 9 April 2026, and its shares stopped trading on Nasdaq on 1 May 2026.

How long is the SunPower warranty, and what do I have to do?

TCL SunPower's UK site says the M Class and Maxeon panels have back contact designs and are both backed by a 40 year warranty, and that the Performance panels are its value line at 30 years. The UK warranty document sets the detail: the Origin models run 40 years, falling to 30 without registration, and the SPR-BE54-DC and SPR-BD54-DC models run 40 years, falling to 25. The SPR-P7 models run 30 years, falling to 25. Output is promised at 99 per cent of rated power in year one, then falls by no more than 0.25 per cent a year, down to 89.3 per cent in year 40. Ask your installer to register the panels and send you proof.

Does the warranty pay to take a faulty panel off my roof?

Yes, for panels fitted in the UK by an authorised TCL installer or partner, or by an independent installer working with an authorised TCL distributor. TCL pays the reasonable and necessary cost of removing and refitting a repaired or replaced panel. TCL SunPower's UK site describes the service cover as removal, shipping and installation included in applicable countries. Ground mounted panels and carports are limited to 25 years unless TCL gives written approval and the panels are digitally registered.

What is SunPower Origin?

It is the panel launched this October. Orders opened across Europe on 19 October 2026, with first deliveries due before the end of 2026, and it is available to SunPower Partners across Europe. The home model SPR-BE54-HD is a fully black panel with 54 cells. It measures 1,800 by 1,134 by 30 millimetres and weighs 26 kilograms. It is rated 485 to 505 watts at 23.8 to 24.7 per cent efficiency. Its temperature coefficient is minus 0.26 per cent per degree Celsius and it loses no more than 0.25 per cent a year. TUV Rheinland has rated it Class A+ for shade.

What is the difference between Origin, M Class and Performance?

TCL SunPower's UK site says the M Class and Maxeon panels have back contact designs and are both backed by a 40 year warranty. The Origin models fade by no more than 0.25 per cent a year. The Performance line, whose model numbers start SPR-P7, is labelled SunPower Shingled in TCL SunPower's own comparison. It has a 30 year warranty and fades by up to 0.35 per cent a year. That 30 year term starts from Performance 7, not from earlier models. A Performance panel is not the one the 40 year headline is about. Ask which line and which model number a quote means.

I already own SunPower panels. Am I covered?

It depends when they went up. Maxeon covers only legacy SunPower panels fitted before 5 August 2024, and only where the owner registered the system with Maxeon before 31 December 2024. SunPower Corporation, which was the warranty holder for systems it sold, declared bankruptcy in 2024. Ring the firm that fitted your panels first, and have your serial numbers and proof of purchase ready.
